The emergency telephone number in Australia is 000. The ANU Emergency Telephone number is 6125 2249. Put this number in your phone NOW.
ANU Security has a number of initiatives designed to keep you safe, including after-hours security escorts (from University buildings to car parks, halls, and colleges -- just dial 02 6125 2249, but be sure to call up to an hour before you require an escort, not as you are shutting down your computer), and the On campus night bus. Crawford is not on the night bus's usual route, so you will have to give them a call (02 6125 2249) in order to get them to pick you up.
You should also download and instal the ANU OK app on your phone. It provides quick and easy access to security and essential services in case of an emergency and will allow you to track and use the on campus night bus, with no need to call security and book the service.
The Safety and Security website includes information on Personal safety and although ANU Security does everything it can to keep you safe, you are still ultimately responsible for your personal security and safety on campus. Bad things can happen and they can happen to you, so demonstrate some situational awareness and
Report any suspicious behaviour, thefts, and incidents on campus to ANU Security

How a thesis is formatted and presented
Don't confine yourself to looking at theses only on your topic because you are not looking for information or argument, really, but more for what a thesis actually is.

    The Stretchy GymThe Stretchy Gym
Many of us are well on the path to crook backs, necks, and shoulders caused by repetitious desk work, so at Crawford PhD we encourage a 'culture of stretch' that gets people up from their desks, away from their computers, and out of their offices. So, working on the principle that individual effort is generally not as effective and motivating as group effort, we have a Stretchy Gym that emboldens people to stretch in public. It's a pretty daring concept, but we're like that at Crawford PhD.

    Conference funding
Conference funds should be used to progress research that is integral to your thesis. It is expected that conference papers will lead to a peer-reviewed publication so it should be your intention to submit the work for publication soon after your return. To qualify for conference funding, you must have a paper accepted for presentation at a recognised, academic conference (i.e., not at a for-profit conference or similar). You should consider your strategy for attending conferences and be sure that you are applying at the right time in your candidature; it is essential that you discuss with your supervisor which conference will be most appropriate, relevant, and useful to your research. Your application will be favourably viewed if you can demonstrate that you have presented the paper in a Crawford or related seminar series (e.g., in the economics, CAMA, environment and resource management, or public policy PhD student seminar series). Approval may be given pending acceptance of the paper, but funds will not be released until proof of acceptance has been provided. Whilst we appreciate that your costings will be indicative, we ask for a reasonable justification of the dollar amounts you are claiming for funding -- screenshots of online quotes are acceptable. For conferences, Crawford will consider providing up to $2,500. This indicated dollar amount does not apply to NSC students.

When there is a milestone that you need to deal with, you will receive an automatic email letting you know. Follow the instructions in the email (see Manage My Degree (MMD) eForms for more info) and address the matter in a timely fashion.
If you do not want to approve a milestone (for example, if you and the rest of the panel require that the student make some changes to the TPR as presented), then you should send the milestone back to the student by 'not approving' the milestone. This is perfectly OK, but if you do do this, then you must make the student aware of what it is that they have to do in order to complete the milestone. This means being clear about your expectations and providing reasons for not approving the milestone. All such communication should be carried out via eForms so that there is an independent record of what is required; email chains can be difficult to keep track of. It would also be a courtesy to promptly send the student an email letting them know that you have not yet approved the milestone.

Topic development and topic changesTopic development and topic changes
The first few months are crucial to the development of a viable thesis topic, i.e., one which in your view can be completed within the maximum time allocated to the course. This is why regular meetings with your student, in which you guide them in the development of their topic and research questions, and in which you suggest relevant literature, are so important early on.

    CourseworkCoursework
PhD candidates are required to do at least 12 units of coursework as part of their PhD program. A full academic coursework load is 24 units per semester, and at Crawford all students are required to undertake at least 12 credits of coursework (across the life of the degree, but usually at the start of their candidature). Students enrolled in less than 24 units per semester are expected to spend the remaining time on their research work. Coursework requirements at Crawford are generally as follows:

    ...
If you decide that you want to supervise this student, then the next step is reply to them saying so. It is now up to the student to go through the normal application procedures (the HDR Administrator can assist the student from here; you have no part in this). The only thing that is likely to happen is that you will receive an email from the HDR Administrator confirming that you want to supervise the student -- just in case you have changed your mind, which, of course, you are at liberty to do.
If you don't want to supervise the student, you need to write back to them, outlining your reasons. If their topic is not of interest to you or not in your area but you still think the student might be a good candidate for the doctorate, then it is charitable to suggest some other people (if you know anyone) for the student to contact. If you think the student would struggle in some way (for example, intellectually, or in handling the workload, or in meeting the English language requirements) then you should perhaps also gently mention this. If you're not sure how such an email should sound, then you could run it past a colleague or the PhD Academic and Research Skills Advisor.

The application process and evaluating applicationsThe application process and evaluating applications
There is very little that involves you (as potential supervisor) as regards the application process, but you might like to know how it works, so here's what happens. The prospective student gets in touch with the HDR Administrator, who provides the student with the relevant application information. The HDR Administrator goes through the application and checks that all the necessary information and documents are present (e.g., supervisor details, research proposal, academic transcript and certificates, CV, referee reports). If everything is in order, the HDR Administrator will contact you to confirm that you are willing to supervise the student for the duration of the candidature. Once you have confirmed your willingness to take the student on, the application then goes to your area's HDR Convenor who evaluates the application and decides whether or not the application should be approved. From here, the application goes to the Delegated Authority for approval. Finally, the HDR Administrator sends the approved application to Central Administration, who arrange to have a letter of offer sent to the prospective student.
